It is common for a child to enter the studio and immediately cling to mom. The room is big, new, different, and there are other people! By the end of the 30 minutes of dance class, after we have been stretching, practicing familiar movements, and learning new steps, most children have gotten very comfortable with the studio atmosphere. In fact, by this time they don't want to leave:)
I have designed the class so that the last few minutes are devoted to allowing the children to dance on their own. The children can move to the music and dance in front of the mirror while we (the parents) can talk and watch. I think this is a very important part of the class. Not only are the kids really enjoying themselves, but the parents are getting to know each other. We usually end up talking about our kids and about the things we love to do.
I love getting to know people and it is fun to find out what other mom's are up to. I have met some great moms who are doing really cool stuff. With all of that being said, I have decided to use the blog as a place to put all the great ideas and resources that we have discussed during those last few minutes of class. So far I have added links to three businesses. One is Melissa's Barefoot Books blog where she has information on how to by those fantastic books directly from her. The other one is Shelly's Usborne book website where she sells her wonderful books. The third link is to Melissa's Creative Learning: Arts and Literacy workshops and consultations. I have also added a section on "favorite things to do in Columbia." This list comes directly from things we have talked about after class. I've also added a few things that my family loves to do but I haven't mentioned in class.
Do you have something you want to add to this blog--a business, a favorite place, or event? Reply by commenting here or contacting me directly through the button at the top of the blog. I'd love for our dance class to be a helpful resource and fun community for moms in Columbia.
See you Monday!
